Jamming through the history of Timbiriche, The sixth studio album of the band that they originally named, “Timbiriche.” Many fans will call this album “Rock Show” or “Corro, Vuelo, Me Acelero” but those who were around when the group released the album probably call it Timbiriche 85.
No matter what you want to call this album, call it great. In the early part of 1986, I found Timbiriche by watching the television show, “Siempre En Domingo.” I had been watching the show to see if Menudo would come on but as I waited and watched, four girls came on the stage and I fell in love. The girls sang, “Corro, Vuelo, Me Acelero.” After the commercial break, Timbiriche continued. Wait, What? There are more of them? The rest of the group came out and sang, “Juntos.” I definitely fell in love with this band.
As a 14-year-old gringo, I didn’t care that I didn’t know what they were saying. This was my NEW FAVORITE GROUP. Hell with Menudo, who in the hell was Timbiriche, and how do I find out about them. This is when we began heading to Mexico regularly so I could find out everything about them. This is when I attempted to learn Spanish, too.
It was because of Timbiriche and this album that my love affair with Latin pop music began and I thank Timbiriche for being the one band that has brought me so much love and joy with music. When I learned about the group, Benny had already left and Eduardo Capetillo had already joined and was part of the promotional tour for the album.
I love everything about this album. There is so many memories of watching television performances and videos. I think “Soy Un Desastre” is the only song that I can actually sing all the “correct” words. Others I know I mess up because of my very bad Spanish, but with that song by Diego, I spent so much time trying to sing along with him with the lyrics in front of me.
Thinking back to this moment in time, if I hadn’t been watching that one day and saw them, would my life have gone a different route? Would I have embraced music in a different language as much as I did? Would I have spent the last 34 years of my life investing my whole existence around music that has become such an important part of my life? I thank Timbiriche every day for opening my eyes to a world of music outside my country.
My entire life people never understood why a white boy would listen 100% to Latin pop music and I embraced that difference through high school and college. No one understood it, but I didn’t care. Timbiriche was there…and even now, Timbiriche is still such an important part of my life. Weekly, daily, hourly. Thank you!
