Karina was Venezuela’s girl next door when she came out with her first album, Sé Como Duele in 1985. Depending on where you originated from, the name of the album changes. When Karina originally released the album in her native Venezuela, the album was titled, Amor A Millon. My copies came from Mexico so it used the name Sé Como Duele. Either way, the music is the same but there is different cover art.
She was part of the era where female singer dominated the pop charts. She shared the hits with artists like Yuri, Tatiana, Lucerito, and many others. When it came to Venezuela, Karina was queen. She had strong vocals and her emotion made every song on the album sound like a tragedy. At times, it feels like she is almost crying.
“Sé Cómo Duele” (I Know How It Hurts) was the first single from the album and it wasn’t long before fans were head over heals for Karina. “Y Si Me Dice” (And If He Tells Me) also hit the charts with a video. The song that happened to be the one to catapult her to icon status was the hit, “A Quien” (To Who).
All the songs were written by Rudy LaScala and together with Karina, the album is great. Dated, but great. It definitely sounds like an ’80s album. I would love to see Karina take of few of these songs and bring them back to life with a more modern sound. There is a lot of good music here and it deserves to be heard.
