This past month, the Puerto Rican rock band, Black Guayaba, released an EP of five tracks for En Otro Viaje (On Another Trip). Apple Music recommended the song, “Te Quiero Tanto” (I Love You So) because I have their four studio albums downloaded to my collection. It wasn’t bad, so I checked it out.
Please excuse my lack of knowledge of the band if I get the following information incorrect. I am in no way stating that I am an expert with this band. What I can tell is that three of the five tracks are new versions of previous Black Guayaba songs. After why first listen, I noticed that the last track, “Ayer” (Yesterday) seemed familiar. With the handy dandy sorting tool on iTunes, I realized I knew the song from them. This song was released originally in 2007 on the album, No Hay Espacio.
This knowledge made me check the four other songs. “Una Vida Sin Ti” (A Life Without You) and “Tu Lo Sabes Bien” (You Know It Well) were both previously released songs that have been recorded again with a new sound. “Te Quiero Tanto” and the “Un Abrazo” (A Hug) I could not find on another album. Let’s just say these are new tracks for the year.
The new version of “Ayer” seems to be the best track of the five. The EP sounds like a dedication of love more than a rock album from the band, though Black Guayaba has never been super hard. They balance on the fence of pop and rock when it comes to music. Overall, I enjoyed the sound, new versions of favorites. and a fun new track.
Give the band’s EP a listen. Tell us what you think in the comments below. We’d like to hear from you.
