When my wife picked 1994 as this week’s year, she gave me one stipulation… Not Menudo. I’ve got one better. Angelo. She didn’t say I couldn’t review an Ex-Menudo and one of the best albums of 1994 came from Angelo Garcia.
Angelo joined Menudo in 1988 but left before his time in 1990. He worked a little with World Wide Entertainment after leaving but his big break came when he signed with WEA and release his first and only album with the label. During this time, I remember watching an entertainment show in Mexico where he performed. What was not to like?
After seeing Angelo go solo, I went out and purchased the CD immediately and had it on repeat for weeks. Not because I was a Menudo fan, it was because it is such a great album. Most of the songs from the album were written by Hector Ayala except for a wonderful ballad, “Luna” (Moon) and “Adios” (Goodbye) penned by Carlos Lara. My favorite song of his “Bajo Cero” (Below Zero). His youthful voice is just so smooth and romantic.
The music is pop with a little bit of hip-hop infusion. It was exactly what was happening in music in Mexico. Why Angelo didn’t go on, I don’t know. He had the ’90s grunge look and with his pretty-boy face, he was the perfect teen idol. At only 18 years old, Angelo had the world in front of him. From what I can remember, I didn’t see any of the songs hitting the charts. This puzzles me because it was so good.
This album has failed to find a home in the digital world yet. In order to listen to it, you will need to find a used physical copy. I’d like to see Angelo get the rights to his music so that the world can experience the wonder of this lost album.
