Chilean singer, Mon Laferte dropped a new single on the 1st of October on streaming services and also released the video. “Algo Es Mejor” seems to be a song that is on a different path than her previous releases over the past years. This path seems to be a good one for Latin pop music fans.
The release came in the middle of her current tour of the US and is the first single from the album, 1940 Carmen, which is scheduled to be released on October 31, 2021. In the announcement of the video, the single dropped the news on her fans as she tweeted: “Mi primer videoclip embrazada” which means, “My first video while pregnant.”
“Algo Es Mejor” reminds me of where Natalia LaFourcade was with the release of Hasta La Raíz and the song, “Nunca Es Suficiente”. A style that is clearly pop but added that hint of nostalgia for the golden era of music.
Mon Laferte released her first album in 2011 under a completely different genre. Her music was hard, just like her image. Wild hair, tattoos, and an attitude. She followed that album up in 2013 with another rock album. It was after this in 2015 that Mon Laferte’s tortured soul embraced a different era in music. She became a torch singer with the album, Mon LaFerte Vol. 1. This change in style turned me off, especially after falling for her rock days.
The genre change did well for her career and her fan base grew. It doesn’t mean I have to like it. Since Mon LaFerte Vol. 1, the singer has continued to dominate the charts and album sales with three more albums, embracing the folk torch song. The release of “Algo Es Mejor”, is a step in the right direction, at least for me. We will see what the album brings at the end of the month.
